Ballistic Side Plate Guide: Size, Carrier Fit and Bulk Acceptance

Turn nominal side-plate sizes into a model-specific RFQ that can be sampled, packed and inspected.

Quick answer: A line such as “6×6 side plate” is only a starting point. The RFQ still needs the standard and edition, threat designation, exact model, standalone or ICW configuration, controlled outline and tolerances, curve, finished thickness and weight, pocket or cummerbund interface, labels, quantity basis, supporting evidence, sample requirements and bulk-acceptance rules.

Side plates are easy to underspecify. A buyer may get a size label but no clear answer on whether the dimensions are metric or imperial, whether the order is counted in pieces or pairs, or how much room the pocket actually has. The aim here is practical: turn those loose points into fields a supplier can quote and an inspector can measure. This is procurement guidance, not advice on tactical placement. Methodology and evidence boundaries: The distinction in this guide is deliberate: a catalogue label is not the same thing as verified product identity. An official 2026 U.S. procurement notice is used only to show that 6×6 side plates appear in real purchasing language. It does not establish a universal size, threat, construction or acceptance rule. The photographs show visible form and finish; they are not evidence of ballistic performance or certification.

An official July 2026 SAM.gov request for information used the phrase “6x6 side plates” alongside standard hard-armor sizes. That is useful evidence that the format is used in procurement. It is not a definition of the finished dimensions, tolerance, construction or performance that every supplier must offer.

1. Give the side plate its own standard, threat and model identity

The side plate deserves its own identity in the file. Evidence for a front or rear plate may not cover it, even when the supplier presents everything as one family. The side item can have a different model number, footprint, curve, edge build, material system or standalone/ICW arrangement. Ask for a separate model-to-evidence row instead of inheriting the main-plate claim by assumption.

The RFQ should identify the applicable standard and edition, required threat designation and any project-specific test conditions. NIJ Standard 0101.07 addresses ballistic-resistant torso body armor, while NIJ Standard 0123.00 provides current NIJ threat nomenclature. The official pages currently direct users to incorporate their respective addenda. Record those details rather than relying on the word “NIJ” or an old level name by itself.

If an NIJ compliant-product listing is required, confirm the exact side-plate model and configuration on the current official record. A supplier's main-plate listing, a laboratory report for another size, or a material test does not automatically establish the status of a side plate.

Once those fields are fixed, the drawing and the evidence have something specific to describe. Without them, “same series” remains too vague for a defensible quote comparison.

2. Replace nominal size labels with a controlled drawing

“6×6” is useful shorthand, but it is not an engineering definition. The drawing should say whether the dimensions are nominal or finished, which units apply, how width and height are taken, and what corner radii, chamfers, edge profile, thickness and tolerances are allowed. A curved part also needs a stated measurement method and support condition.

Metric and imperial labels should not be treated as interchangeable. 150 mm is not exactly six inches, and 200 mm is not exactly eight inches. The difference may or may not matter for a particular pocket, but that is a fit decision—not something to leave to catalogue wording. Quote the controlled drawing and do not silently replace it with the nearest familiar size.

3. Compare 6×6, 6×8 and 150×200 as project formats

For each format offered, put the following on the comparison sheet:

  • finished width, height and thickness with tolerances;
  • exact model and construction revision;
  • curve and orientation;
  • unit weight and pair weight;
  • side-pocket model and size used for approval;
  • standalone or ICW status and named backer when required;
  • report or listing reference; and
  • packaging unit, such as one plate, one matched pair or one complete armor set.

After the drawing is approved, the size name should stop carrying the decision. Inspectors can compare the measured plate with the controlled values; they should not have to decide whether 150×200 mm is “close enough” to a 6×8 label.

4. Control curve, finished thickness, edge and orientation

The footprint is only one part of side-plate fit. The specification should identify a flat or curved build, explain how the curve is described, show the outward-facing side, and say whether coating, textile cover or other exterior layers are included in finished thickness. If the curve or edge is asymmetric, add front, rear and side views to the drawing.

Look around the entire edge for chips, cuts, open seams, uneven coating, signs of delamination or other contract-defined defects. Those observations speak to workmanship only; they do not prove or disprove ballistic performance. A pre-shipment inspection is not the place for improvised bending, striking, tapping or dismantling.

Orientation markings should remain legible after normal packaging and handling. If the project specifies “strike face” or “body side” text, freeze the wording, location, language, contrast and durability in the artwork approval. A right/left designation should be added only when the exact product design requires it.

5. State standalone or ICW, including the exact backer

An ICW side plate is not fully specified by writing “with soft armor” or naming a protection level. NIJ Standard 0101.07 defines in-conjunction armor as armor intended to provide the specified protection only when layered with specified body-armor model or models. In other words, the backer is part of the product identity, not an accessory the end user can choose later.

Record the backer manufacturer or listee, exact model, panel designation, size relationship and any placement or configuration limitation present in the evidence. Check that the quotation, test record, labels and delivered backing panel all identify the same combination.

For a standalone side plate, still verify the exact model and evidence. “Standalone” does not mean that every plate with the same material or family name shares the claim. It also does not mean the plate will fit every side pocket.

6. Record weight per unit, pair and complete system

Weight should match the way the order will be issued and inspected. Weigh one finished side plate and the matched pair separately. If the project compares complete armor systems, add the required side pouches, named backers and main armor components using the same basis for every offer.

A family-level weight is inadequate when several dimensions or constructions are offered. The 6×6 model, 6×8 model and 150×200 mm model should each have their own value and tolerance. State whether labels, coating or exterior cover are included—which they normally should be for a finished-product comparison.

At inspection, use a suitable scale and identify each weighed sample by model and lot. Do not average different sizes into one result.

7. Verify usable side-pocket and cummerbund compatibility

The size printed on a pouch is not the usable space inside it. Measure internal width and height, opening, corner access, closure overlap and the thickness left after seams and fasteners. Then check retention and make sure the pocket closes in the approved configuration without forcing either the plate or its backer.

Use the actual project carrier or approved side pouch for sample evaluation. A seller's statement that a plate “fits standard MOLLE pouches” is too broad for bulk acceptance. Record the exact carrier or pouch model, size and revision used for approval.

For ICW side armor, verify that the named backing panel remains in the documented relationship with the plate. The inspection is about component identity and fit, not tactical placement. This article intentionally does not advise where an officer should wear a side plate or how equipment should be deployed.

8. Freeze labels, quantity units and packing

Side plates are an easy place for a quantity error to enter an order. Write both units—for example, “200 pieces / 100 pairs”—when that is the requirement. Say whether each carton contains loose plates, matched pairs or complete armor sets, and keep the commercial invoice, packing list and carton marks on the same basis.

Labels may need the exact model, size, lot or serial number, production date, configuration, orientation, manufacturer identity, care information and contract-specific OEM fields. Requirements depend on the applicable standard and project; do not add a compliance mark simply because the catalogue name includes an NIJ level.

Packaging should protect edges, coatings, covers and labels during the specified route. Freeze inner separation, bagging, carton quantity, weight, numbering and destination marks.

9. Match evidence, sample and production lot

Use one traceability matrix to connect the quotation, drawing, report, current compliant-product record where required, label, approved sample, production lot and cartons. The exact side-plate model should read the same all the way across. If one column uses a family name and another uses a model code, stop and reconcile it before approval.

Review report scope carefully. Check model description, dimensions, curve, standalone or ICW configuration, named backing armor, standard edition, threat and test item photographs or drawings. If the offered side plate differs from the tested item, ask the supplier to explain the relationship and provide evidence acceptable to the buyer.

Material, dimension, curve, cover, coating, edge or backer changes require written approval and, where necessary, a new sample, report review or independent test.

10. Approve a sample and define bulk acceptance

The sample should look like the order that will actually ship: same model, size, curve, construction revision, cover or coating, orientation, label, pocket pairing and packaging. Measure finished dimensions, thickness and weight using the agreed method. For an ICW item, include the named backing armor and identify it in the sample record.

Useful bulk checks include:

  • quantity by exact model, size, piece and pair;
  • finished dimensions, thickness, curve and weight;
  • surface, cover, coating, edge and orientation marks;
  • label identity, serial or lot traceability and production records;
  • ICW backer quantity and exact model;
  • side-pocket fit on sampled complete systems;
  • report and packing-list consistency; and
  • carton quantity, protection and marks.

If a contract requires destructive or ballistic lot testing, define the method, sample-selection authority, laboratory and disposition separately. Visual inspection should never be described as proof of ballistic performance.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the better buy: a 6×6 or a 6×8 side plate?

Neither size wins in every project. Start with the coverage drawing, then compare the exact model, evidence, finished weight and thickness, and fit in the specified pocket. The measured dimensions matter more than the familiar label.

Can a supplier treat 150×200 mm as a 6×8-inch side plate?

Not without approval. The measurements are not exactly equal. The RFQ should state finished dimensions, tolerances and the pocket being used, rather than allowing the two names to become an automatic substitution.

Does a side plate need the same protection level as the front and rear plates?

The buyer must define the requirement for each armor component. Do not assume a side plate shares the main plate's model, evidence or protection configuration merely because both are supplied in one set.

Can a ballistic side plate be ICW?

Yes, an offered side plate may be an ICW configuration. In that case, identify and supply the exact backing-armor model required by the evidence; a generic soft panel or level description is not enough.

How can a buyer confirm that a side plate fits the carrier?

Measure the usable pocket and opening, then approve the exact plate—and its required backer where applicable—in the specified carrier or pouch. Put the model, size, thickness, closure and retention result in the sample report.
