Riot suit buying checklist

Anti-Riot Suit Procurement Checklist: Coverage, Sizing, Mobility and Sample Inspection

Count the pieces, map the coverage and make people move in the sample. That reveals more than a front-view catalog photo ever will.

Quick answer: Define the suit component by component, including coverage zones, shell and padding construction, total weight, size range, adjustment, closures, overlap, carry bag and markings. Require users to trial the complete set with their duty clothing and equipment. Do not assume that an impact-protection suit is ballistic, stab resistant, flame resistant or chemical resistant.

Define what is inside one “set”

Riot suit offers can look comparable while containing a different number of pieces. One set may include front and back torso protection, shoulders, forearms, upper arms, groin, thighs, knees and shins. Another may combine sections or omit a removable component. Helmets, gloves, boots and carry bags may or may not be included.

Create a line-by-line component schedule and ask the supplier to mark included, optional or unavailable. That schedule should follow the quotation, sample approval, packing list and receiving inspection. It is the simplest way to prevent “complete set” from changing meaning during the order.

Coverage should remain sensible after movement. A shoulder plate that leaves a large gap when the arm is raised or a knee cup that slips below the knee is not solved by an impressive standing photograph. Ask for front, side and back drawings or photographs of the actual proposed set.

Impact protection must have a named method

Terms such as “high strength,” “anti-riot level” and “can withstand strong impact” do not tell the purchasing team how the product was evaluated. A useful requirement names the applicable agency, national or tender test method and the acceptance criteria. The test sample must match the offered model and construction.

Impact protection is not the same as ballistic or stab resistance. Flame, chemical and electrical properties are separate again. If any of these are required, specify the test method for that property and ask for a report matching the exact components supplied.

Safe specification rule: never transfer a claim from one component to the whole suit. A stab-resistant insert in the torso does not make the arms and legs stab resistant, and a flame-tested fabric cover does not prove the complete assembled suit has the same result.

Ask for finished construction details

  • Hard outer shell material and thickness where applicable.
  • Inner foam or energy-absorbing layer construction.
  • Textile backing, mesh, lining and skin-contact surfaces.
  • Strap material, width, adjustment range and replaceability.
  • Buckle, snap, hook-and-loop and zipper specifications.
  • Ventilation openings and how edges are finished.
  • Fastener heads and any exposed hard points on the wearer side.
  • Color consistency across plastic, textile and webbing parts.

The buyer does not need to dictate every polymer or foam formulation. The aim is to define enough of the construction that a cheaper, visibly different substitute cannot be introduced without declaration.

Weight needs a test condition

Quote the complete set weight in a named size and list what is included. A suit can appear light because the quoted figure excludes the groin protector, shoulder parts or carrying bag. Ask for component weights if the tender places a limit on particular zones.

Weight distribution matters as much as the total. A heavy torso section may feel stable while poorly supported thigh and shin parts swing during movement. The sample trial should therefore be longer than a two-minute fitting.

Size by body range, then verify by movement

“One size fits all” usually means a wide adjustment range, not a good fit for every wearer. Request the recommended height, chest, waist and limb ranges for each size. Record strap adjustment limits and whether different component sizes can be mixed—for example, a large torso with medium legs.

Run the trial over ordinary duty clothing and any cold- or wet-weather layer the team expects to use. Have wearers walk quickly, climb stairs, kneel on both knees, sit in a vehicle seat, raise a shield and reach their belt equipment. Note where parts migrate, overlap poorly or press into joints.

Check compatibility with the rest of the kit

The suit must work with the riot helmet, shield, gloves, boots, belt and communications equipment. A high torso collar may clash with a helmet shell. A bulky forearm protector may make the shield strap too short. Thigh armor can cover belt-mounted pouches or prevent access to a holster.

Twenty-minute sample inspection

  1. Lay every component out and compare it with the approved component schedule.
  2. Photograph front, rear and label of each major piece.
  3. Weigh the complete set in the stated size.
  4. Pull and operate every buckle, strap, snap, zipper and hook-and-loop closure.
  5. Check all edges and wearer-side fasteners for sharp or exposed points.
  6. Put the suit on without supplier assistance and record donning time.
  7. Complete the movement trial with helmet, shield, belt and gloves.
  8. Remove the suit, check for shifted parts and note pressure or abrasion points.

If multiple sizes are ordered, do not evaluate only the medium sample. At minimum, verify the ends of the proposed range before the size ratio is fixed.

Labels, instructions and bag

Each set should be identifiable after it is removed from the carton. Agree the model, size, production lot or date, manufacturer or supplier identification and care information. If components can be separated, decide whether individual pieces also need size or set markings.

The carry bag should hold all components without forcing hard shells against closures. Specify handles, zipper, identification window or printed mark, and the packing arrangement inside. A clear packing diagram helps receiving teams confirm that nothing is missing.

What a good supplier reply should look like

The reply should return the component schedule, completed rather than ignored. It should state the sample size and weight, attach a size chart, identify test documents and show both sides of the actual product. Optional accessories should be priced separately. If a requirement cannot be met, the deviation should be visible—not buried in a general brochure.

Is an anti-riot suit bulletproof or stab resistant?

Not by default. Most are intended primarily for impact protection. Any ballistic, stab, flame or chemical claim requires separate evidence for the exact supplied model and covered zones.

How should riot suit sizes be selected?

Use wearer height and body measurements with the proposed suit’s adjustment range, then complete a movement trial over duty clothing. Confirm whether component sizes can be mixed.

What should the sample test include?

Verify every piece and the complete weight, then test donning, adjustment, closures, overlap and movement with the intended helmet, shield, gloves, boots and belt.
